We're Obsessed

If you have a sweet tooth and live in the Pretoria area, then listen up. Keik Bakery is an absolute must. Trust us!

We cannot resist something sweet. In fact, we're putting Keik Bakery on speed dial.

Covid-19 and the subsequent nationwide lockdown in 2020 affected businesses and individuals alike but for Liezl de Bruyn, the owner of Keik Bakery, it was the chance to make her pastry dreams come true.

Ours too, especially when looking at Liezl’s chocolate brownies and giant cheesecake macarons. Eeek!

Keik Bakery is all about what makes Liezl’s heart happy. The name stems from the Greek word ‘keik’ meaning ‘cake’. She loves Greece and all things Mediterranean – especially the flavourful ingredients.

Liezl has always had a passion for baking. She completed a three-year course in Culinary Arts at The International Hotel School and decided to become a pastry chef. “I have learnt a lot during the last ten years of my career and worked at various places from bistros, food shops, a fine dining restaurant and even developed recipes for a bistro bakery, ” she says.

Liezl uses only the best ingredients and makes everything from scratch. “We bake everything ourselves, even our fillings are made from scratch with high-quality ingredients sourced locally. No shortcuts,” she says.

Some of Keik Bakery‘s bestsellers include their brownies and giant macarons. For the brownies Liezl uses European coverture chocolate and tons of butter which is evident in the rich, decadent and very fudgy texture. She then adds rum caramel, sometimes pretzels, chewy nougat or anything else that adds to the amazing texture. Yum!

“Our giant macarons are popular as it is an international craze. We like making them giant-sized as one small macaron is never enough,” Liezl laughs.

And then there’s the gorgeous birthday and wedding cakes. “Our birthday and wedding cakes are all custom made to our client’s specifications. We enjoy adding their favourites to the flavour combinations. I.e. if they love pecan nuts, toffee and the colour green, we would do a green velvet cake with pecan toffee buttercream and caramelized pecan nuts. Yum, right?” Liezl explains.

Currently, Liezl is hard at work creating her online store. “We would like to add a few birthday party boxes and perhaps some out of the ordinary wedding and birthday cake flavours with great texture and flavour profiles. I’ll keep you posted,” she says.

Keik Bakery is also a firm favourite at the monthly Pretoria Products Market.

So if you are looking for a special birthday or wedding cake, get in touch. Keik Bakery is situated in Elardus Park, Pretoria but she also offers delivery when needed.
