To come up with the perfect name for their business, Johan and Blair Scheepers searched far and wide before finally settling on Basketly.
“We wanted to name the business Basket Case, but all the websites and social media handles were taken. We went through the thesaurus back and forth, searched high and low because we wanted basket to be somewhere in the name. When we typed out Basketly, it just worked,” Blair explained.
On a trip overseas, the couple stumbled across a basket manufacturer and fell in love with the handmade beauties. What started as importing a few baskets for their friends and family quickly spiralled into something bigger than they ever could imagine, and Basketly was born.
In February 2019, the first shipment of baskets arrived in the country, and the duo organised a Sunday shopping experience at their house where friends and family could shop their favourite baskets. “After that day, friends of friends started calling, also wanting baskets, and we decided to build the online store. On the 12th May 2019, Basketly.co.za went live. The first person to buy online was a complete stranger, and we couldn’t believe our eyes,” Blair beams.
It’s always been Blair’s goal to open an online store. “Through our customer’s social media posts, we get a glimpse into their lives and homes and see how much they love their baskets and all the different ways they use them. We can’t even put into words how these images make us feel and encourage us to work even harder to build our brand. We want our customers to see our business as an example of possibility, that if you dream big and work hard, you can build the business you always wanted,” she says.
We’re obsessed with baskets, but why are they so popular?
“Because baskets are so versatile, you can use them to house potted plants, for any storage need, pet beds, dust bins, laundry. The list is endless,” Blair says. Basketly sells locally made and imported products.
You can shop all your favourite Basketly baskets at www.basketly.co.za or book an appointment to browse their showroom in Elarduspark in Pretoria. Also, keep an eye out for the brand at Pretoria markets.
