Mushroom meatballs for the win!

Add some spunk to your favourite traditional meatball recipe with some mushrooms. Yes, mushrooms can go into meatballs. And, it's delicious.

This mushroom meatball recipe is quick and easy… if you do not mind getting your hands dirty for a change, that is.

Serves 4-6


For the meatballs:

  • 15ml Olive oil
  • 250g Beef mince
  • 250g Big brown mushrooms – minced
  • 90g Fresh bread crumbs
  • 45ml Fresh parsley – finely chopped
  • 1 Egg -beaten
  • Black pepper to taste

For the sauce:

  • 1 Can Tomato and onion mix
  • 250ml Beef stock
  • 15ml Tomato paste or Sundried tomato paste
  • 5ml Paprika
  • 1 Smoked yellow pepper – cut into cubes
  • Salt and pepper to taste


For the meatballs:
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Mix all the ingredients, except the oil, together. Layer your hands with some flour. Use a tablespoon to measure the scoops and roll them into nice tight balls.
Heat the oil in a pan and fry the meatballs on all sides until sealed and golden brown. Place fried meatballs into a casserole.

For the sauce:
Mix all the ingredients and drip it over the meatballs. Flavor it with salt and pepper to taste. Cover the casserole with a lid or tin foil and let it bake for 20-25min.

Serve with mash and seasonal vegetables and a touch of sour cream
